Conservative dentistry focuses primarily on the prevention and treatment of dental caries and its complications.
What causes dental caries?
Dental caries is caused by bacteria present in dental plaque, a biofilm formed by food debris, saliva, and bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus. These bacteria metabolize sugars from food into organic acids, which lower the pH around the tooth enamel. If the pH drops below 5.5, demineralization of the enamel occurs, and the tooth tissue weakens.
Without treatment, caries progresses to the dentin and subsequently to the dental pulp, which can lead to painful inflammation, infection, and other complications. In the early stages, caries can be treated with remineralization therapy. In the case of more severe damage, it is necessary to remove the damaged tissue and then fill the defect.
Types of dental fillings
Photocomposite fillings
The most common and highly aesthetic option. The composite material is cured with light and bonded to the tooth using an adhesive system. They offer a natural appearance and can be shaped to match the tooth. They require more time for processing and higher qualifications of the dentist during application.
Glass ionomer cement
Contains fluorides that help protect against caries. It has lower mechanical strength, aesthetics, and a weaker bond to dental tissues than composite. It is mainly used in children's teeth or as a base layer beneath composite fillings.
Amalgam fillings (will be banned in the Czech Republic starting in 2026)
Durable but less aesthetic, amalgam fillings do not bond to dental tissues. They can cause discoloration or cracks in the teeth and sometimes lead to allergic reactions.
Treatment process
Each procedure is planned according to the patient's needs and discussed in detail. We use modern anesthetics to ensure painless treatment. All procedures are performed under the control of a dental operating microscope and with the use of a rubber dam, which isolates the working field and increases the accuracy of the treatment.
Our goal is to provide the patient with healthy and functional teeth that will last as long as possible.
